Lynchings are a part of America's past and some believe they still exist today. The Equal justice initiative documented more than 4,400 lynchings of Black people between 1877 and 1950. They were lynched for a variety of reasons, from being accuse of raping white women, arguing with a white man, or not knowing their place. Many lynchings were public.
