All was in order when I left last night.

-Around 11:00 p.m. -For all the ransacking, I can only see one thing missing.

She really loved that thing.
-What's a snuff box?
-It holds powdered tobacco.
-The wood was salvaged from the hull of a Spanish Armada shipwreck.
It was worth around £20,000.
-How many people knew about this box?
-Not many.
-Someone who knew the family, then.
-Who'd do something like this?
-[ Sighs ] Ah, Alex.
-If there's nothing else, I'm gonna go to the crematorium.
-If you don't mind, could I ask where you both were last night?
-I flew in this morning, from Seattle.
-When I left here, I went straight home last night and was at work first thing.
-You opened the butcher's on the day of Mum's funeral?
-[ Sighs ] -Thank you both.
-Yeah, I'm sorry, this is now a crime scene.

-What's the beef there, then?
-Well, they had a massive falling out years ago.
Lloyd accused Alex's then-boyfriend of stealing their grandmother's engagement ring.
The boyfriend denied it.
People took sides.
He and Alex split up over it.
-And she never forgave Lloyd?
-That's why he left.
It got worse after that.
When Mrs. Charlton got sick, Lloyd never came to care for his mother.
-What, from America?
-Mm-hmm.
He works in tech.
Long hours, big stress -- said he just couldn't get away.
He didn't expect his mother to go downhill so quickly.
-So what about Alex's ex?

-Sly Dunwoody.
♪♪ [ Plays tentatively ] -I still can't believe it.

-Some hood's broke into Mrs. Charlton's house.
I'm sickened by it.

On the day of the funeral.

♪♪ -[ Sighs ] ♪♪ -What links this burglary is that the suspects gained entry by kicking in the back door.
-Mrs. Charlton's snuff box is very different to what was stolen before at the other burglaries.
-They were all in holiday homes, right?
-Yeah, and only copper piping was taken.
I mean, this snuff box was clearly targeted.
Whoever stole it knew what it was worth and where to find it.
-The whole town is up in arms about this, right?
We need to act promptly, before people draw their own conclusions and the pitchforks come out.
-Yeah.
Accusations around here can create bad blood that lasts for years -- look at Alex and Lloyd.
[ Door buzzes ] -How was the house-to-house?
-One of the neighbors saw Lloyd Charlton entering his mother's cottage last night.
-Are they sure it was him?
-They couldn't have been more certain.
-Okay.
So much for Lloyd flying in this morning.
♪♪ -Why are we here again?
-It's called a shore survey.
It's for college.
It helps us see what marine life is thriving and what might need some help.
-[ Laughs ] Oh.

And with the sponsor for my visa out of business, they kicked me out of the country.

-Last night, I slept in the car.

-Just wanted to spend some time there by myself, like, say goodbye to Mum however I could.
-You didn't come up to see your ma because you lost a job.
She was dying, man.
-I decided I'd wait until I got a new job, so she wouldn't have to worry about me.
Before I knew what was happening, she was gone and... Finn, I swear, that snuff box was definitely still there when I left.
-Would you mind coming into the station so we can get a few more details?
-Yeah.

♪♪ ♪♪ -You think I stole from my mum?

[ Sighs ] Have you spoken to, uh, Sly Dunwoody?
-Why, because he dated Alex years ago?

And he knew where Mum kept that box.

-I've got a 30-venue country and western extravaganza kicking off in two days so of course, not busy at all.
-Well, in light of the break-in at Mrs. Charlton's, we wanted to check your whereabouts for the last 18 hours.
-Why have you come running straight to me?
-These are just standard inquiries.
-Are things still tense between you and the Charltons?
-How would you feel if somebody accused you of stealing their dead grandmother's engagement ring?
I want nothing to do with them, they want nothing to do with me.
Somebody been whispering about me?
-So last night, you were...?
-He was here.
-Both morning and night.
-You're happy to corroborate that, Clint?
-Aye, it was just a regular, boring night.

♪♪ -You said Sly was with those investors last night.
-Aye.
Look, I'm just helping Finn get to the point faster.
There's no point in them wasting their time investigating Sly when the real criminals are out there.
There's no way he robbed Mrs. Charlton.
You can say what you want about him, but he's not that bad.

♪♪ [ Gulls cry ] ♪♪ -Well, if I had to guess, I'd say half of the stolen copper from the holiday home burglaries is in there.

'Cause I've a mind to do a wee spot of fishing later this afternoon.

♪♪ ♪♪ -Yeah, I reckon that if there are more crates out there, that they'd be pretty close to the first one, to make the pick-up easier.

-It's a sort of, "see no evil, hear no evil" situation.

I noticed at the funeral, things are pretty tense between you and Marlene.
Are you really against her and Ash getting married?

It's just that this whole question of same-sex marriage and the church, it has me in knots.
I know, everything's changing so fast, and I'm struggling to keep up.
As soon as I get my head around the latest new thing, the next new thing lands.
I know, I know, it's all progress and that's great, but by the time I get it processed, I've already put my big foot in it and offended somebody or other.
-I'm sure it's hard for Marlene too.
-Yeah.
What frightens me is that, whatever choice I make...
I lose.
I just think it's so unfair to ask me to choose between my family and my faith.
-You sure that's what Marlene's asking of you?

Port Devine Cleaning Company.
They specialize in second homes.
-All the copper robberies are from empty holiday lets.
-And she would know what was vacant.
-Let's go and see what Alex has to say for herself.
♪♪ ♪♪ -Alex isn't answering her phone either.
Will we check round the back?
-Yeah.
♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪ [ Clears throat ] -[ Kissing ] ♪♪ -Sorry to interrupt.

Barry's found the second crate, which has given me an idea.

-We're protecting ourselves.
The whole town has always been against us.

-Yeah, we met up after I left Mum's.
-Clint said he was at the Commodore all night.
-Must've been a mistake, I suppose.

-Has Sly ever asked you to lie for him?

-Alex, I can see on your record you have a conviction for dangerous driving.
-And?
-Do you wanna tell us what happened?
-I was going too fast.
I overtook a tractor on a corner and nearly collided with another car.
No one got hurt.
-Were you alone?
-Sly was with me.
-Uh, in the other driver's statement, they thought it was Sly behind the wheel.
-They got that wrong.
-[ Sighs ] Alex, I want you to think very carefully about what I'm gonna ask you.
Is there any way that anyone apart from you -- and I mean anyone, could have access to your information about which holiday homes were empty and when?
-No.
-Are you sure?
♪♪ -Sly could've gotten info about the empty lets through me, yes.

So a scrapyard owner in Campbeltown, Scotland, was contacted by a man in Port Devine looking to offload copper, no questions asked.
The owner got a number from the caller ID and... ♪♪ it's Alex Charlton's landline.
-A man from Port Devine -- that's got to be Sly.
♪♪ -Here, I was trying to remember, what's the name of that game we made up when we were young?
The, uh, half-football, half-rugby, what was it called?
-Uh, NGA.
-That's it.
What did it stand for again?
-Come on.
"No Girls Allowed.'
-[ Laughs ] That's right.
Yeah, thank goodness for puberty, eh?
We caught ourselves on.
-[ Laughs ] So, lad, what's the craic with your mum?
-She's at a retreat.
-Aye, but missing Ma's funeral?
They'd been friends for 50-odd years.
-It's complicated.
Look, she thinks she's doing what's best.

[ Sighs ] Standing here doing nothing for hours whilst everyone's out there searching for Sly.

A suspect boat has stopped just near the location of the crate.
[ Siren wails ] ♪♪ ♪♪ -Josh!

I was to take it to Scotland, to a scrapyard in Campbeltown, to sell on, but last night's storm delayed everything.
-Which caused the first crate to get washed up onto the rock pools.
-I needed to get the other crate out of the water and across to the scrapyard.
I thought it was a victimless crime, you know?
The houses were empty.
-You thought the insurance would cover the losses?
-Did Alex Charlton tell you which houses were empty?
-She told me nothing.
-Was Sly involved?
-I did it on my own.
-Clint, we found Mrs. Charlton's snuff box in the Commodore.
If you didn't steal it, who did?
-[ Sighs ] No idea.
-Clint, do you know where Sly is?
-[ Exhales deeply ] ♪♪ -Here, love, listen, why don't you take a wee break, huh?

How did this happen?
-At this moment, we believe that Sly saw a way of making a quick buck.
He used Alex and recruited Clint to steal the copper.
-All because I wouldn't give them the money to go on their tour?
I mean... what did I expect?
-Hey.

-Feels like it is.
Sure, on the day that Clint proposed, you knew it was a bad idea.
You saw something like this happening.
-I thought that Clint was gonna prove me wrong.
I hoped he had.
-How much trouble is he in?
-He could be looking at prison time.
-I don't know how much more of this I can take.
-But it depends.
Clint has admitted to being involved in the theft of the copper, but he hasn't said a word about the snuff box... or whether Sly's involved.
That could make a huge difference.
-You want me to try?
-Nicole, I can't ask you to do that.
-Give me five minutes.

♪♪ -I'll be downstairs, okay?
-Mm-hmm.
♪♪ -It's not in Clint's nature to land his brother in grief with the police, no matter the truth.
-What, so, Clint's just gonna keep schtum?

-What about Nicole, the person who's supposed to matter the most?
-I can't believe you've been seeing Sly.
-I keep thinking about what Mum might say if she knew all this was happening.

I took the blame back then 'cause I thought he loved me, and now here we are again.

Look, I just couldn't bring myself to believe that he actually might have stolen the engagement ring.
I reckoned it must have been lost or something.
But now, all these years, later, he steals Mum's snuff box.
It's all my fault.

The band splitting didn't make Sly who he is.
It just gives him an excuse for his failures, and then he blames his choices on you.
Where's the loyalty in that?
-I know, but, Nicole, it's like -- -This code of silence, it doesn't make you a good brother or a criminal or whatever it is you think.
It makes you an idiot.
