>>> FLU SEASON ISN'T OVER.
HERE IN PENNSYLVANIA THERE VIVUS RECENTLY CLAIMED THE LIFE OF A SECOND-GRADER.
>> IT KIND OF HITS HOME IN THE SENSE IT IS A REALITY CHECK, THAT YES, OUR KIDS GET SICK.
WE DO WHAT WE NEED TO DO AS PARENTS AND TEACHERS TO MAKE SURE THEY ARE TAKING CARE OF AND THEY GET BETTER.
BUT, IT KIND OF GIVES YOU THAT, OH MY GOSH, IT IS SERIOUS.
IT IS NOT JUST THE COMMON COLD ANYMORE.
THESE THINGS CAN PROGRESS INTO OTHER THINGS.
>> Reporter: THE MARBLE NEWTOWN SCHOOL DISTRICT ANNOUNCED THAT MATTHEW IS ZCICH SECOND-GRADER DIED SUNDAY NIGHT FROM COMPLICATIONS SURROUNDING THE VIRUS.
THEY ARE WARNING PARENTS MORE CHILDREN CAN GET SICK AFTER BEING EXPOSED TO THE SECOND WAVE OF THE VIRUS HITTING YOUNGSTERS ESPECIALLY HARD.
THE NUMBER OF DEATHS AMONG CHILDREN ARE THE HIGHEST THE COUNTRY HAS SEEN SINCE THE SEVERE OUTBREAK A DECADE AGO.
THE CDC SAYS TWO STRAINS OF THE VIRUS THAT ARE PARTICULARLY TOUGH ON CHILDREN ARE SPREADING AT THE SAME TIME, AND ARE TO BLAME.
THAT BOY IS ONE OF 92 CHILDREN WHO HAVE DIED SO FAR THIS YEAR BECAUSE OF COMPLICATIONS SURROUNDING THE FLU.
HEARING QUAKERTOWN SCHOOLS, PARENTS AND STUDENTS ARE CONNECTING WITH ELEGY TO HELP STOP THE SPREAD OF THE VIRUS AND BECOME MORE FLUENT.
>> IT HAS THE ABILITY TO NOT ONLY JUST TAKE HER TEMPERATURE BUT ALSO HELP US TO MONITOR WHEN THERE ARE FEVERS, OR FOR PARENTS TO PUT IN INFORMATION ABOUT COUGHS, FLU SYMPTOMS, SO WE ARE BETTER ABLE TO TRACK AND MONITOR WHAT IS GOING ON IN OUR SCHOOL BUILDING.
WHICH ASSISTS US IN MAKING SURE IF WE NEED TO DOUBLE DOWN ON A PARTICULAR ROOM OR GRADE LEVEL THAT WE HAVE THAT ABILITY BECAUSE WE HAVE THE DATA TO BACK IT.
>> Reporter: 20 ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS ACROSS OUR REGION HAVE BEEN GIVEN SMART THERMOMETERS TO TRACK THE FLU IN REAL TIME.
THE FLUENCY PROGRAM ALLOWS NURSES, TEACHERS AND FAMILIES TO CONNECT THROUGH AN APP THAT TRACKS WHERE ILLNESS IS CIRCULATING IN CLASSROOMS.
WHEN PARENTS LOGON THEY CAN RECORD THEIR CHILD'S TEMPERATURE AND SYMPTOMS ANONYMOUSLY, AND WHEN SYMPTOMS GET SERIOUS THE APP WILL EVEN ADVISE PARENTS TO VISIT A PEDIATRICIAN.
>> THIS IS THE PRE-K CLASS, THERE ARE 36 PEOPLE LOGGED INTO THIS APP.
THREE STUDENTS WERE SICK IN THE LAST SEVEN DAYS, TWO STUDENTS HAD A RAINY KNOW, ONE STUDENT HAD A COUGH, ONE HAD A SORE THROAT.
AS PARENTS AND EDUCATORS WE ARE NOT ACTUALLY WAITING UNTIL THE POINT WHERE THEY HAVE THAT FEVER, WHERE IS I THINK THAT USED TO BE THE PROTOCOL.
A FEVER OF A CERTAIN NUMBER WAS WHEN WE SENT THEM HOME.
NOW IT'S, OH IT'S NOT THAT THEY ARE JUST SEEMING LIKE THEY'RE NOT OKAY, THERE IS NO FEVER THERE, LET ME REACH OUT TO THE PARENTS AND SEE WHAT IS THEIR OPINION?
DO THEY WANT TO GET THEM?
DO THEY WANT TO TAKE THEM TO THE DOCTOR?
I THINK WE ARE REALLY TRYING TO GET IT BEFORE IT HITS THE WORST POINT.
>> Reporter: SCHOOL AND PRINCIPLES CAN COMMUNICATE TO PARENTS THROUGH THE APP TO REPORT ILLNESSES BEING REPORTED INSIDE CLASSROOMS.
KATE McSHERRY WHO SERVES AS A NURSE AT SAINT ISIDORE SAID EARLY DETECTION IS KEY TO STOPPING THE SPREAD OF VIRUSES LIKE THE FLU, STREP THROAT, AND MORE.
>> CHILDREN WHO COME BACK TOO SOON, WHO REALLY SHOULD STAY HOME ANOTHER DAY, OR THEY ARE GIVEN SOMETHING ON THEIR FEVER GOES DOWN, BUT WHEN THAT WEARS OFF THE FEVER COMES BACK AND WE ARE SENDING THEM BACK HOME.
I THINK IT HELPS THE PARENTS TRACK AND BE MORE AWARE OF WHAT IS GOING ON.
AND WHEN THEY SEE THE NUMBERS I'M SURE SOME OF THEM THINK TWICE ABOUT WANTING TO CONTRIBUTE TO THAT, SO I THINK IT IS HELPFUL.
>> Reporter: OVER 1400 OTHER SCHOOLS ACROSS THE COUNTRY ARE CURRENTLY PARTICIPATING IN THE FLUENCY PROGRAM.
PARTICIPANTS SAY THE GOAL IS TO STOP THE SPREAD OF VIRUSES LIKE INFLUENZA AND KEEP KIDS IN DESKS AND TEACHERS IN CLASS WHERE THEY BELONG, HELPING AND LEARNING.
>> I THINK THAT IT JUST HELPS US TO KNOW WE NEED TO KEEP OURSELVES HEALTHY TOO, OR OKAY WE ARE SEEING THE SYMPTOM WE DON'T NEED TO BE AT SCHOOL.
WE NEED TO MAKE SURE THAT WE ARE SPRAYING DOWN IN THE MORNINGS AND WHEN THESE GUYS LEAVE IN THE AFTERNOON, SPRAYING OUR TOYS AND CLEANING OUR TOYS MORE OFTEN THAN WE WERE BEFORE.
IT USED TO BE MAY BE A ONCE A MONTH PROCESS, WHERE IS NOW I'M FINDING WE NEED TO CLEAN OUR TOYS EVERY COUPLE OF WEEKS INSTEAD.
WE AS TEACHERS CAN GET RUN DOWN AS WELL, AND WITH THAT THE GERMS THAT ARE IN OUR CLASSROOMS CAN AFFECT US AS WELL.
AND IF WE ARE NOT HERE BECAUSE WE ARE HOMESICK, YOU KNOW IT JUST DISRUPTS THEIR DAY, IT DISRUPTS THEIR LEARNING PROCESS.
>> Reporter: IN QUAKERTOWN, BUCKS COUNTY, I'M CASEY LOPEZ, PBS39 NEWS TONIGHT.
